There are two main types of eyelid malposition: entropion and ectropion.
Entropion
Entropion is a curling of the free edge of the eyelid that presses against the eyeball, causing the eyelashes to rub against the conjunctiva and/or cornea.
It usually affects the lower lid, but can also occur on the upper lid.
Entropion is classified according to its aetiology: congenital, scarring, spastic, involutive or senile.
Entropion
Symptoms
Rubbing of the eyelashes on the conjunctiva and/or cornea causes chronic eye irritation with pain and tearing. In addition, constant rubbing of the eyelashes on the cornea can lead to serious problems such as erosions or ulcers.
Treatment
The outpatient surgical procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and involves repositioning the free lid margin against the eyeball.
There may be some degree of inflammation and bruising in the first few days after surgery, which usually subsides after 7 days.
Ectropion
Ectropion is a protrusion of the free edge of the eyelid, causing it to lose contact with the eyeball. It is usually due to excessive laxity of the tissues with age caused by slackening of the lateral and/or medial tendons. Most often the lower eyelid is affected. Ectropion can also occur as a result of facial paralysis or trauma.
Ectropion
Symptoms
Ectropion causes chronic irritation of the eyelid and eye, which appears red and watery.
Treatment
