Pterygium is a benign lesion of the conjunctiva, most often located in the inner corner of the eye. First limited to the conjunctiva, it can spread to the cornea if left untreated. The major cause of pterygium is the sun.
Early signs
In the early stages of pterygium formation no complaints are present. Sometimes symptoms of dry eye can occur, such as a foreign body sensation or redness in the corner of the eye. The pterygium only becomes truly symptomatic when it reaches the center of the cornea, disturbing the visual axis. It can also sometimes be responsible for severe astigmatism.
Treatment
Treatment is only necessary in symptomatic forms and is based on surgical excision under local anesthesia.
