The intravitreal injection is performed on an outpatient basis after the application of anaesthetic drops and takes only a few seconds. The drug is injected through the sclera (the white of the eye) with a very thin needle. This injection is harmless to the surrounding eye structures.
These injections can stabilise or even reverse the disease, but they usually cannot cure it permanently. They must therefore be repeated frequently.
At present, intravitreal injections are still performed in a hospital (Clinque d’Eich or Hôpital Robert Schuman). It is likely that this will change in the near future and that this simple procedure will be offered in one of the operating theatres of the Centre Ophtalmologique Place de Paris.
