fluid to escape, which may affect vision (<b>diabetic macular \u0153dema).\u00a0<\/b>Abnormal new blood vessels may also develop (<b>proliferative retinopathy).\u00a0<\/b>In the absence of quick treatment, they may lead to blindness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Cataract:<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0<\/i>clouding of the lens of the eye, leading to reduced eyesight, is much more common in diabetes, and appears much earlier in life than it does in healthy individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Glaucoma<\/i><\/b>:<i>\u00a0<\/i>this lesion of the optic nerve tends to appear earlier in diabetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" sudden interruption in the flow of blood to the optic nerve, causing major vision impairment (similar to an optic nerve attack).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><i>Keratopathy<\/i><\/b>:<i>\u00a0<\/i>chronic lesions of the cornea, causing irritation, redness, dry eye, tearing, and sometimes vision impairment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Paralysis of the ocular muscles<\/i>:<i>\u00a0<\/i>interruption of the flow of blood to the nerves which control the movement of both eyes, resulting in seeing double.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>Retinal vascular occlusion<\/i>:<i>\u00a0<\/i>sudden obstruction of the arteries or veins of the retina, sometimes leading to significant vision impairment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Regular monitoring is necessary, because most of the eye disorders diabetes causes do not show any symptoms until they have reached an advanced stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Most of the major visual impairments caused by diabetes can be avoided by following certain\u00a0<b>recommendations<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8211;\u00a0<b>Keep blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible:\u00a0<\/b>A level of about 6% considerably reduces the risk of developing eye complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Keep blood pressure levels close to normal<\/b>\u00a0with diet, exercise, and medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Keep cholesterol levels low\u00a0<\/b>with diet, exercise, and medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Don\u2019t smoke:\u00a0<\/b>tobacco constricts vessels that are already weakened.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Have your ophthalmologist perform a dilated-eye exam regularly:\u00a0<\/b>early diagnosis and appropriate treatment make it possible to avoid serious visual impairment, in most cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Treatment\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Proliferative diabetic retinopathy\u00a0<\/b>is treated with\u00a0<b>panretinal photocoagulation<\/b>\u00a0(PRP) using a laser. This is an outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthesia (eye drops). In most cases, several sessions are necessary. However, the procedure does cauterize new blood vessels in most patients, and considerably reduces the risk of blindness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today,\u00a0<b>\u0153dematous maculopathy<\/b>\u00a0is<b>\u00a0<\/b>treated with<b>\u00a0intravitreal<\/b>\u00a0\u201c<b>anti-VEGF\u201d injections\u00a0<\/b>in the vast majority of cases.\u00a0<b>Lucentis<\/b>\u00a0\u00ae (ranibizumab) and\u00a0<b>Eylea<\/b>\u00a0\u00ae (aflibercept) are the most commonly used drugs. The injection is an outpatient procedure. After eye drops are applied to numb the eye, it takes only a matter of seconds. Several injections are required to treat diabetic macular \u0153dema over a period lasting several years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Intravitreal injection of corticosteroids\u00a0<\/b>is indicated for certain patients. Corticosteroid therapy is effective for four to six months, on the average, making it possible to reduce the number of injections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Laser photocoagulation\u00a0<\/b>was long the only treatment available for patients with diabetic macular \u0153dema.
