The majority of patients (&gt;90%) present a\u00a0<b>primary, open-angle glaucoma.\u00a0<\/b>This disease affects about 2% of the population over age 40, and is one of the primary causes of blindness in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Glaucoma and intraocular pressure<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Elevated intraocular pressure does not always lead to glaucoma, because optic-nerve susceptibility differs from person to person.\u00a0<b>Ocular hypertension\u00a0<\/b>is defined as increased intraocular pressure in the absence of any optic nerve lesion. Only the ophthalmologist knows whether ocular tension should be treated or not. However, even if treatment is not (yet) necessary, regular check-ups are indicated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Conversely, glaucoma may be present even if the intraocular pressure measurement is normal. Some individuals have such a vulnerable optic nerve that they develop glaucomatous damage even with ocular pressure within the range of statistically normal (this is called\u00a0<b>\u201cnormal pressure glaucoma\u201d).\u00a0<\/b>The<b>\u00a0<\/b>ophthalmologist alone can detect changes in the optic nerve, prescribe the appropriate tests, and establish a treatment
