Ectropion

Home / Eyelid treatment and repair / Ectropion

Palpebral ectropion is an outward eversion of the eyelid, so that it no longer touches the eyeball. It is usually related to tissue laxity associated with aging, as a result of a loss of tone in the medial or lateral tendons. It generally affects the lower eyelid. Ectropion may also appear after facial paralysis or trauma.

Symptoms

Ectropion produces chronic irritation of the eyelid and eye, which is red and tearing.

Treatment/Repair

This outpatient surgical procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, and consists of repositioning the outer edge of the eyelid against the eyeball.

In the days immediately following the procedure, there may be some swelling and bruising, but they usually disappear after one week.
